Why Use An Image Gallery?

If you are an artist people want to see your work! Painters, ceramists, photographers, sculptors. Upload your work to your WordPress website and create a gallery in a few minutes.

Are you an author? Upload your book covers and add a link to buy.

If you write a travel blog, or any blog post where you want to show a collection of photos, a gallery is a great way for your visitors to experience your photos in a neat and tidy grid layout.

The WordPress Gallery Block makes it easy to change the order of your images, and add or delete photos, too.

Want to Sell Your Images?

If you want to sell images, purchase a WordPress plugin, like EnviraGallery, that lets you accept payments right from your website.

The pro version of EnviraGallery creates a gallery plus integrates with WooCommerce.

I have used the EnviraGallery and it creates a beautiful gallery quickly and easily. I have not used the pro version to sell photos or artwork.

I have also worked with WooCommerce and have integrated PayPal and other payment processors to sell items through a website. The learning curve with WooCommerce can be steep. There are many steps to selling items from your website and adding payment and shipping options.

Video Transcript

My customer was receiving a lot of spam comments; there are 176. As I quickly scroll through all her comments, you can see who is sending them. It’s a little bit suspicious.

And also these comments don’t really make a lot of sense. Some of them are in a different language.

Unfortunately she must have approved a few of the comments because WordPress doesn’t allow comments to come in until you approve them. Something from Bollywood.

These just don’t make a lot of sense. So I’m going to be getting rid of the existing comments as well as protecting her site for, for future.

I’m going to go to the comment section. From the dashboard go to comments. Look through all the comments. I know that they are not legitimate, so I’m going to do bulk select by clicking the Author button. Then, from the bulk select dropdown menu, click Mark as spam and Apply.

I will put them into the Spam folder. There’s All, Mine, Pending, Approved, and Spam. They will be added to her spam folder, which currently has 76 SPAM items, or items that have been marked as SPAM. So now I want to go to her Spam folder because I don’t want her spam folder items to go over 100 spam emails, because if it goes over one hundred, it can possibly crash the server. And it also takes quite a while to remove Spam.

As you can see, I’m in her Spam folder because it’s highlighted, or it’s black, as opposed to the others are blue. So once again, I’m going to Bulk Action, Select all under Author and then Delete permanently. Click Apply.

I will go through this process until all of the spam is removed from her Spam folder.

But as you can see in the comments section, we still have 156 spam items, or at least 156 comments to confirm that they are not spam. So I’m going to head back to All, and I’m going to repeat the process again.

There are 20 comments on each page. I will quickly look through this. If a name looks familiar, then it’s very possible it’s someone you know, you don’t want to delete them. But these don’t do not look like they’re legitimate.

They look like spam. I’m going to go through the same process, Bulk select. Mark as spam. Apply.

I will go through this process once again, page by page. And there are eight more pages to go through, but I’ll also will be looking at my spam folder because I don’t want my spam folder to go over 100. So as you can see, it’s a bit of a time-consuming process.

And because it is so time consuming, once we get rid of the spam in her current spam comments folder we’ll be moving onto the next step, which is to stop the comments from coming into future posts that she creates.

Because I have 100 spam comments I’m going to click Empty spam. This is another option.

As long as I have one hundred or fewer, when I click Empty spam, that will empty out my spam folder. That was a much quicker way than going through page by page.

Back to All. This gets me back to my current Comments that have come in, and that are waiting for my approval.

It looks like these had been a approved, but this really is SPAM. It’s the erotic film.

We know comments from Ginny are good.

And there again, I’m going to go to her Spam folder because it’s under 100 spams. The spam says 68.

I’m going to click Empty spam.

The next thing I’m going to do is stopping any spam coming into future posts. And for that I’m in the Dashboard and I’m going to go down to Settings and Discussion. And from here I’m going to uncheck, Allow people to submit comments on new posts. And then click Save changes.

The next step is I want to stop spam coming in on existing Pages and Posts. There were two comments from people the site owner knew, so I don’t want to get rid of those comments. They’re both from this one post, Strengthen Your Immune System.

I’m going to show you what I’m going to do to stop spam on existing Posts and Pages.

Go to dashboard and Posts and All posts. Select All, except that there’s one post that I want to keep the comment so I will uncheck that. Then click Apply.

Another screen comes up. Under Comments I want to choose Do not allow. Click Update. Doing this will not allow anyone to comment on any of these Posts and that will stop all spam coming into the posts that are currently on your page. Whereas, what we did previously, that stopped any spam comments from Posts or Pages you create in the future.

After I refreshed the Page, you can see there are no more comments on her page. It took out the spam comments, but because we’re saying we don’t want anyone to comment on the existing pages or future pages, this is what the site will now look like.

The other thing I wanted to show you was a plugin called Disabled Comments.

This will work as well. This is really great if you have a huge site and you’re getting well over a hundred comments a day. But if you do the work I showed you, you would not have to install a plugin. Some people don’t like installing plugins. They feel that it slows their site down, and it can. And plugins can cause problems.

The three steps I showed you about how to get rid of comments could be a great solution for you.

Why Aren’t My Blog Images Showing Up?

February 7, 2021 by Nancy Fields 8 Comments

2 Reasons Why Your Blog Images Don’t Showing Up on Your Main Blog Page

  1. You did not add them as a featured image
  2. A plugin conflict

FYI: My older blog images stopped showing up after I installed an SSL Certificate on my site, but most people’s blog thumbnails don’t show up because they have not added them as a featured image, or they have a plugin conflict. This article address both of those problems.

Want a WordPress website but not sure where to begin? Click here to download my website start-up cheat sheet.

You will find a few more suggestions below…

No Featured Image

To confirm you are missing a featured image, log into your WordPress site and go to your dashboard.

  1. Choose Post > All Posts > name of post and look under featured image
  2. If you do not see this right hand menu, click on your settings icon to reveal your Post and Block menus

If no featured image is displayed, add a featured image by clicking on “Set featured image.” Upload an image from your desktop or your media library, and be sure to tag your image.

Click update and view your main blog page

Plugin Conflict

If your featured image is not showing up on your main blog page you may have a javascript error.

To confirm this is your problem you will need to go into the development tools of your website browser. Because Google Chrome is so popular, I will show you how to check this in Chrome.

Chrome menu in the upper-right-hand corner select More Tools > Developer Tools

Jetpack and Smush Plugin Conflict

One person discovered their featured images were not displaying because they had a conflict between two plugins: Smush and Jetpack. She found the problem using the Health Check plugin.

In early 2020, WordPress added Health Check to the WordPress Dashboard. You will find it under Tools > Site Health, so check here before installing the Health Check plugin.

Add a Default Featured Image

If you or your team members are continually forgetting to add your featured images, you can use a plugin called Default Featured Image.

This plugin will add the exact same featured image if you leave the “Featured image” selection blank.

The is perfect if you are just starting out and developing our brand.

Best Domain Name For You

January 22, 2021 by Nancy Fields Leave a Comment

What Is A Domain?

A domain (domain name) is your unique internet address.

Your domain name includes:

  1. https: Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure (Protocol)
  2. It can, but does not need to include www
NOTE: www stands for World Wide Web but it’s no longer necessary
  3. TLD: Top-level domain such as .com, .net, .org
domain name protocol and TLD illustrated for fieldsgraphicdesign.com

Want a website but not sure where to begin? Click here to download my website start-up cheat sheet.

http vs. https

Have you ever stumbled upon website with a “Not Secure” notice to the left of the domain name?

Not Secure warning in website URL

That’s because the website Protocol began with http, not https.

In order for your site Protocol to begin with https you need an SSL Certificate.

What is a TLD?

TLD stands for Top-level domain.

The most common TLDs are

  1. .com
  2. .net
  3. .org

But those aren’t the only ones. I have one that’s nancyfields.design.

domain name protocol and TLD illustrated for nancyfields.design

You will also need to choose a TLD when you choose your domain name.

To see a complete list of over 1,000 TLDs click this link.

What Domain Name Should You Choose?

So many industry descriptive domain names were purchased years ago such as realtor.com it’s best to choose your first and last name, or your company name.

But what if my name is already taken?

In 2000 my first and last name were already take, so I chose nancyfieldsdesign.com and also fieldsgraphicdesign.com.

I use both domain names so if someone types in NancyFieldsDesign.com, it redirects to FieldsGraphicDesign.com.

A few years ago I bought nancyfields.design, but it’s still “parked” meaning I own the domain but have not yet used it.

Using a different TLD

I were an author and my name was not available I could choose something else, such as nancyfieldsauthor.com, or nancyfields.blog.

If I were a coach, nancyfields.coach. An artist, nancyfields.art.

How to Find a Domain Name?

There are lots of ways to find domain names. Most hosting companies sell domain names, but I prefer logging onto https://who.is/. This website tells me within seconds if a domain name is available and at what price.

You can buy your domain from who.is, but, if you have not yet purchased a website hosting account you might want to check with them because many web hosts, like bluehost, also offer one free domain name for your first year of hosting.

6 BIG Reasons to Choose WordPress When You’re Just Starting Out

January 12, 2021 by Nancy Fields Leave a Comment

I’m in a private Facebook group with over 200 online entrepreneurs from around the world.

Last week one of the members asked if she should start a website with WordPress, or something else? So many people recommended other platforms that I began to wonder if WordPress was yesterday’s news.

And then I came to my senses.

Click here to download a cheatsheet to help you get started with WordPress.

  1. You own your content, unlike posting your content on social media or blogging sites like Medium.
  2. Start small with a simple 3-page website and add to your site over time. This saves you the hassle of changing platforms, later.
  3. WordPress is free and it’s been around since 2003.
  4. Search engines like Google LOVE WordPress code. That means it’s easy for Google to find you, so your prospects find you.
  5. Developers love WordPress, too. Their (3rd party) plugins are built to super power your website. Plugins like Yoast SEO and WooCommerce.

Where Do You Start if You’re Just Staring Out?

Before you can build a website with WordPress you will first need:

  1. a WordPress compatible website host
  2. a domain name
  3. an SSL Certificate

Which Web Host Should You Choose?

Choose a hosting company that:

  • Fits your budget right now
  • Offers the type of support you are looking for such as 24/7 chat or phone support

If you are not sure what type of support you need, choose one host and see if it meets your needs. You can always change hosting companies later as your needs change. If and when you do change hosting companies, they will often make the switch for you.

I’ve used Bluehost for years, and have built many website for customers who had hosting plans with HostGator, GreenGeeks, GoDaddy, inMotion, NameCheap, SiteGround, WPEngine, WPMktgEngine.

They all have their pluses and minuses. Just choose one and get started.

Before You Purchase Your Domain Name

If you have not yet purchased a domain name, ask your preferred hosting company if they offer a free domain. Many of them do!

If you have already purchased a domain name, no worries. This step-by-step video shows you how to point your domain name to your new hosting account.

What Is an SSL Certificate and Why Do You Need It?

SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer.

An SSL certificate is a special code that keeps your data transfer more secure, which is critical is you’re asking people to give you their credit card information online.

Once installed, your SSL creates also creates a website address that begins with https vs http.

website URL with Not Secure warning

What if you’re not asking people for their credit card information?

A few years ago Google decided to penalize websites that do not have an SSL certificate by adding a “Not Secure” notice to the left of the URL.

A “Not Secure” warning is a turn off, plus visitors cannot see your site without clicking through a number of “Warning Website Not Secure” settings.

Bite the bullet and purchase an SSL certificate annually.

Where to get an SSL certificate?

From your website host.

How much does and SSL certificate cost?

It depends upon your web host. SiteGround offers a free SSL Certificate, but most web hosting companies charge between $10 – $180 per year.

If you’re just starting out and not selling anything online your web host will choose the right SSL Certificate for your needs.

What is Pantone?

Pantone is a color matching system for designers and printers to specify color. As a graphic designer for nearly 30 years, Pantone is my go-to color matching resource for all design projects.

Each year Pantone releases a “color of the year” based on emerging trends in fashion, home and graphic design.

Video Transcript

Welcome to 10 minute Monday. Today. I’m going to show you how to freshen up your website with the 2021 color of the year. And look at this sweet little girl in yellow, and guess what? The new color of the year, there’s actually two colors of the year. This year one they’re called Illuminating. The other is ultimate Gray. They have chosen these two colors because they feel that it represents positivity for the yellow and fortitude for the gray, with all that we have been through.

Pantone chooses their colors of the year based on fashion. You can see how it’s not over-powering with yellow, but it’s just a little shock of yellow.

Look at the sign, we’re stronger together. There was a very strong indication that yellow being positive was going to be playing  quite a prominent place in the color of the year, but you know, also it’s interesting because  it doesn’t really matter what country you’re in.

Yellow is caution, especially yellow and black together. Graphically the strongest color combinations.

A gray, black and white photo really works well with yellow.

It shows up again in this wonderful poster and how they’ve used yellow, which can seem to be a weak color or light color, but it can be used very powerfully.

Wow, look at this website and the yellow of an egg. How healthy is that?

I began to look at other websites that are using yellow successfully.

The one on the left would be considered more of an older design. There’s really strong color blocks, but we are moving into a time, and design, especially with websites that people are on the internet and on their computers so much that they were looking for a more soothing look. So you can see on the right, the little shocks of yellow, which actually are much more modern feeling.

This website uses a brighter yellow. Almost like the egg yolk yellow, which will also work. And there again, it’s interesting as you see everything in gray. And then the yellows. Yellow could get very strong, very quickly. My eye immediately is drawn to where the yellow is. And here’s another design that is also feeling modern.

I wanted to show you a website that has been using yellow for a very long time.

Guess whose website it is? Amy Porterfield. In fact when I first heard Pantone present on yellow and gray, and I thought Amy has been using yellow forever.

That has been her brand color for years. And the way she uses it; she’s highlights text with it, but she also finds images that have yellow in them. And it’s interesting here. Guess what last year’s Pantone color of the year was? It was this denim color, so she’s very color conscious. Also blue and yellow together are great, but there again, she has used yellow time and time again. And then here her yellow buttons.

One thing I learned about yellow at a cash register. Next time you’re checking out at a grocery or department store, be aware of what colors are around the cash register, because the color yellow, they have found, actually creates more sales. If something is yellow, people are more inclined to pick it up.

And the other thing I want to show you, say you wanted to find an image, as I did here in this sweet little girl.

I went to my favorite resource, which is Adobe stock. And I simply typed in yellow Pantone 2021. I got 722 images to choose from. So I thought, ‘Gee, if I can do that with my paid stock photography. Can I also do that with Unsplash?’ which is another one of my favorite free stocks?

Sure enough. I typed in yellow Pantone 2021 because yellow is the most prominent color. I could also type in gray, which I’ll show you. But look what came up. These are free images.

I thought it was a really nice way  to add yellow to your site in your blog pages.

You can add also then into your social media posts.

As I began to choose my topics that I’m going to be using in blog posts and on social media and LinkedIn, here are some images that I chose and that’s all from that Pantone color of the year.

So that Adobe stock that’s not free, is it?

No, it’s not. I believe it’s $19.99, so $20 a month for the Adobe stock. However,  Unsplash is a  great free resource. Just type in gray Pantone. And they spell it. Gray, G R A Y versus G R E Y. Let’s see what comes up, gray Pantone 2021.

So they’re giving you some grayes and also here’s a beautiful image. So you can find more gray images, and then you add a little bit of yellow onto the gray, as you saw earlier. That is a really nice way to bring in these two colors of the year.

Any questions?

No, but I would comment, you know, Nancy that yellow in the chakras works with that mental level works with that third chakra.

So people are always drawn to yellow because it’s a mental level.

Oh. So it’s at the top, right?

No, it’s a third chakra. Third solar plexus. If you were printing out a flyer. When we used to do flyers before we had all this digital, we used to always print them on yellow paper, because it was more attractive.

How wonderful. I know Elsie loves to wear yellow.

Yes, I look good in yellow. Some people find that depending on your coloring, they find it can be difficult to wear. Well, Alan, you have on yellow for gold.

Well, it’s sort of yellow. Yes. Yellow.

You’ve come to the right place.

I looked down this morning, so what I was wearing.

Go forth and try to use some yellow.

Elsie also has a lot of gold in her site and she loves golds. So she’s really very current.

And the other trend.  Ihis is coming from the home interior trends and it’s very strong as well in IKEA. As people are spending more time at home, they are getting more cozy. So cozy colors.

Also trending, and they say that a big trend that has happened in home interiors. All of the paint companies, Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams. They’ve all taken the shift together and they are terracotta, warm, and deeper earthy jewel tones.

So a little burst of yellow, bring a little excitement into your room.

That’s true.

Super Easy WordPress Website Backup With Duplicator Plugin

December 27, 2020 by Nancy Fields Leave a Comment

Step-by-Step video walks you through how to make a manual backup of your WordPress website with the Duplicator Plugin

WordPress meetups can be pure gold. For me it was the day someone recommended using a free plugin called Duplicator.

I asked about migrating a website, but soon discovered that I could also use Duplicator to manually backup my website, too.

FREE short LIVE trainings. Click here to get an invitation to 10-Minute Monday and get step-by-step instruction on how to improve your website.

Why Create a Manual Backup?

Today most website hosts backup your site daily. That’s great if you catch a problem within 24 hours.

For example, one day someone reached out because his website had become a fake Viagra sales page. His site was hacked, and his web host could not retrieve his old site information because it had been months since he had checked his website, and months of Viagra sales page “backups.”

If he had created a manual backup with Duplicator right after his site was built, he could have gone back to that version, but all was lost.

Duplicator Plugin for Manual Backups

If you’re looking to schedule automated, set-it-and-forget-it backups, this plugin is not for you.

The benefit to Duplicator is once you run the first complete backup, you simply click one button to make more backups. It could not be easier.

How to Use Duplicator Plugin To Backup Your WordPress Website

Welcome to 10-Minute Monday.

Today I’m speaking about how to manually backup WordPress with duplicator, which is a plugin. There’s a free version and a paid version. I’ve always used the free version.

Duplicator is a manual backup verses plugins like BackupBuddy and a few others that are automated: you set them up. But  I really liked Duplicator.

I’ve been using it since 2015. You have a copy of it on your hard drive or on your website, on your computer. Or you can put it onto a separate hard drive, And that really works for me.

I’m going to show you how to put this in (install it). I’m putting this in from scratch on one of my websites.

So I have logged into my site and I’m going to go to the backend. I’m going to put in a plugin and the plugin is the Duplicator plugin.

Under plugins, click add new. Where it asks you to search for what you want, search plugins, I’m going to type in duplicator.

This is definitely the one that we want.

So just click install now, and then  activate it. It is by Snap Creek. Duplicator Snap Creek. It’s been around  for quite a while.

And what’s also great about this plugin is that once you make a backup of your site, if you wanted to change website hosts, or, there are people who actually create websites on their desktop before they upload them.

This is going to give you all the information that you want because it’s creating a database for you, as well as duplicating all of your WordPress files.

So I’m going to go back into installed files and make sure that it’s activated. And it is because I can see right away, as you can see on the left-hand side now in the dashboard, you see the word Duplicator.

And then I’m going to click on the word packages.

No package is found because  I haven’t duplicated this site yet. So all I do is click the, create new button.

I’ve got the storage archive and installer.

The next thing I’m going to create is the package. I do want to create the whole package.

What it’s doing is scanning the site. You can see right here, size check there’s a notice,  and you do not have to have all greens to be able to run this program. It is recommended, but this is my test site.  I’ve got a number of things on there. So I’m going to input yes.

Continue with the process and let’s Build this.

So you can see that it’s building my package and depending on how large your site is, it will take longer, but it really doesn’t take very long at all.

Now I can either do the install or separately from the archive, but I’m just going to do this one click download because I do want both the installer and the archive.

These are the two pieces that I need. Should my site ever go down the installer runs the archives, which is the entire database and all of your WordPress files. So I’m going to click download or one click install.

I don’t know if you could see this, but it downloaded onto my desktop.

When I show this in the Finder this is telling me that it’s made a complete archive of my site. Now I will take this and put it somewhere on my desktop.

Every single website that I have has its own folder. So, for example, if I were to put it on my desktop and I would just drag it over from the downloads it’s right here.

But there it is.

I could burn a disc. I could put it onto a separate hard drive, so if your site should ever go down. You can also see it gives you the date. So depending on how often you go into your site, and how many new things you add, you could be backing up once a week.

You can be backing up every day, if you wanted to, but once you have gone through this process, go to duplicator and packages and tell it to run it again. Create New. So basically all you’re doing is clicking, Create New, and then have it. Create your package, which includes everything: the installer and all the archives.

If your websites goes down (or gets hacked) I would call my host and I’d say, “My site is down. I have made a backup with the Duplicator plugin.”

Sometimes our sites go down and we don’t even know they’re down.

So if you website host keeps backing up daily, they’re going to only give you the last backup. They may be backing up a site that’s been dead. So therefore you then say, “Can you please, walk me through how to do this?”

They’re very, very good. I would just call the host and say, “I’ve got the files help me get this on.”

You give them the whole zipped file (that Duplicator created) and then they would go into your C-panel for you, and replace (the old file with the files you created with the Duplicator plugin) and you’re good to go.

So once again, it is called the Duplicator plugin. It’s been around for a long time and I’ve been using it for the last five years and I’ve never had a problem with it. And this is only for WordPress.

Or you could pay for a backup plan with your website hosts. But if your site goes down you would call your host right away and say, “I’ve got a problem. Get into my C-panel and restore this,” and they could. But if you get hacked and you don’t know you’ve been hacked, they (website hosts) don’t keep your files for more than I think, 48 hours.

And that’s why this is really assurance. If you find that you’ve been hacked or you had a any kind of a problem, you’d go to the version before that. And at least you’ve got that part of your website saved. You have a complete version of your website saved the database and all the WordPress.

How many (backups) do you keep? I would only keep the last one. I would just keep deleting the others.

When I say hacked, for example, one day Jerry came to a 10-Minute Monday. I went onto his site and it was turned into a Viagra site.

I said, “Jerry, have you changed businesses?”

I’ve heard about this, but to see it, and he says, “Oh no, I didn’t do that.”

I said, “Probably what happened was you had an old plugin, and whatever server you’re on, one of these nasty spam robots got in and they got in through an old plugin  and they took over your site, which is actually very common.

Knock on wood. It hasn’t happened to me.

How do you protect your side from being hacked? Keep it backed up. If you go into Dashboard and Updates and you see any little red buttons, just keep it backed up.

Sounds good. Well, thank you for coming today.

How Many Pages Does Your Website Need?

October 25, 2020 by Nancy Fields Leave a Comment

Answer: Three plus the “Other Stuff”

website basics 3 pages creates a website 3 basic t-shirts hanging white, black, grey

You can create a website with 3 pages…

  • Home
  • About
  • Contact

…but you need the “other stuff” to have a 3-page website that works hard for you, and is more than a fancy online business card.

Your site may be only 3 pages, but if you want a website that helps build your business download my “Other Stuff” checklist.

Add A Free Offer

It doesn’t matter if your website has 3 or 30 pages, the main benefit of having a website is being able to grow your email list for free, and engage with your followers.

You’ll not only place a free offer on your home page, you’ll add it to your About page, too!

Home…But Not For Long

Be sure to have at least one button that clicks off your homepage onto your About or Contact page.

Google ranks your site after a site visitor clicks off one page and to another page on your website.

That’s a big reason why a one page website is not a good option.

About Them Page

Focus your About page text on how you can help your site visitor. Make it less about your accomplishments and accolades, unless is directly impacts our perfect customer.

  • Describe what you can do for them
  • Add a free offer that solves ONE problem quickly and easily
  • Let them know how to get in touch with you

Don’t Give Out Your Email Address

Do not add a link to your email address anywhere on your website. Use a contact form instead. Robots crawl the internet looking for names and email addresses to scrape off websites and sell them to spammers.

One of my customers insisted her email address be on every page of her website. Within a few months she was begging me to remove it because her email inbox was receiving over 1,000 emails per day from companies she didn’t know.

If You’re Active on Social Media

If you want people to join your Facebook community, find you on LinkedIn, or other social media platform, add you social media links on your home page, and all your pages.
