This weekend I met an entrepreneur at a cocktail party: yes an old-fashioned style cocktail party full of people who have been going to cocktail parties for the past 60 years. The gracious and cordial hostess introduced us saying, “I think you two women have a lot in common.” Little did she know?
After exchanging a few pleasantries I learned Janet has been struggling to build a WordPress website because she was told it was free and easy. Hum. Free and easy. My mother had another word for that, but I digress.
Like many entrepreneurs Janet needs to save money, but the time she’s wasting trying to build her own site is causing strain on other areas of her life, like reading a How To Build A WordPress Website manual in bed. Guess our mothers have always been smarter than we give them credit.
What Janet Really Needs
Entrepreneurs, like Janet, who are just starting out need a website with a:
- Home page
- About page
- Products or Services page
- Contact page
What makes WordPress so great is that it’s a blog. Blogging keeps your site content fresh so that Google indexes your site, which means people will actually find you on the web.
In fact, with a WordPress site, if you don’t switch from the home page default setting to “Front page displays a static page,” your Home page doubles as your blog, automatically. Now that’s easy.
If you don’t want to be a website designer or web developer, hire one to build a WordPress site for you. When it’s done, make sure they’ll teach you how to use it, so you can really save time and money. Now, that’s smart because you don’t need to know how to build your site, you just need to know how to maintain it.
