Last week I was blessed with truly magical day. I picked up a new WordPress tidbit from my favorite trainer, my business coach pointed me in an exciting new direction, and I met an inspiring woman who began her business eight years ago. My day ended day dancing the cha-cha. It made me feel lucky to be living right now, regardless of the labels society wants to tag upon me.
How I hate the term middle age
Why don’t they just call it the Dark Age, lock us all in the attic, and be done with it?
Not.
I’ve never felt more alive and ready to fulfill my life’s mission while meeting more Dark Age women whose brilliance is on fire. They not only have ideas burning inside of them, they are like a dog with a bone — tenacious and willing to bring their ideas to fruition at any cost. Of course they will do it with little or no resources. They’ve been doing it all their lives as loving mothers, wives and homemakers, regardless of their husbands’ net worth.
The other day I heard that only 47% of Americans are working. That low number was astounding to me. In this time of sky high, U.S. unemployment, more women are starting businesses than any other group. For the past year I’ve been attending a business information series at my local community college called The Network of Women Entrepreneurs. Guess who are the regular participants? Not young women. It’s the Dark Agers: The women who have been through-it-all, and are not ready to give up. My gut tells me it’s this same group that’s most likely to bring the U.S. economy out of its current economic malaise.
Do you have a great idea but don’t know where to start? Here’s my checklist, compiled after years of being a wife, mother, and freelance graphic designer who has recently breathed new life into a business that was dying on the vine:
Get a business coach to help you get clarity on your mission, your market, and who’s your perfect customer. I’m over the moon about social media guru Christine Gallagher who’s been my coach since July 2012. All sessions are via internet, phone and or Skype.
Embrace technology. It’s not as scary as you think, and your teenaged kids and relatives are NOT smarter than you are when it comes to computers.
Get a WordPress website. WordPress will help you attract your perfect customer; plus it’s easy to update yourself — whether you design it or hire a WordPress pro to design it for you.
Read and listen to inspiring and motivational books. My two favorites are Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill and The War of Art by Steven Pressfield (not just for artists).
Try hypnosis to overcome resistance, stay positive, and keep moving forward when the road gets bumpy. Daze has been my go-to person since 1996.
Don’t forget that the Dark Middle Ages was followed by the Renaissance.
Shine!
