WordPress 5.4 Update – Favorite Features

WordPress 5.4 Update What's In It For You? image concept young black woman looking right

It’s not what I wanted to hear.

‘Innovate or die!’

The speaker said it repeatedly.

‘If we don’t change the platform every 3 months, WordPress will not exist.’

It was 2013. I was at WordCamp Providence (Rhode Island) listening to the Keynote speaker.

It had taken me months to learn WordPress. I finally felt comfortable with this new platform after designing my own site, plus 2 other sites in WordPress for my customers.

“Stop it!” I wanted to say. “Let the rest of us catch up, and catch our breath.”

Well, 7 years later WordPress continues to innovate and win more users every year.

In fact, here are three new features that came downloaded with WordPress 5.4 that I think you’ll like, a lot, and one feature you might want to turn off, for now.

2 New Blocks To Like in WordPress 5.4

Social Icons Block

Easily add Social Icons in your posts and pages.

Prior to this I had to add a plugin like Simple Social Icons. This is so much easier.

The Buttons Block

The “old” block was called Button. The new block is called Buttons.

This new feature allows you to add multiple buttons side by side. This is great for adding two different calls to actions, like many of my customers do.

You can even get fancy by adding a gradient background color to your button. See below.

New Block Selection Tool in WordPress 5.4

I like this A LOT!

When you’re trying to edit a nested block, it can be difficult to find and click on block you want to change.

The new Select feature makes it easy. Just mouse over the block you want to edit, and select it.

1 New Feature You Might Want to Turn Off

To turn off Fullscreen mode and go back to the “original” view:

  1. Click on the 3 vertical dots
  2. Select Top toolbar
