My son is a ceramic artist.

He has two websites: His small business website and his Etsy™ Shop.

Because he has two websites, I can leverage the power of both websites to increase his opportunity to make more sales on Etsy™.

Within one week of optimizing both sites he sold a coffee mug — among 2 million other mugs listed on Etsy™!

My son has given me permission to share how I am using his small business website to increase his sales on Etsy™.

Not all buyers go straight to Etsy™ to search for hand made items. That’s where the power of a small business website built in WordPress comes in.

The reason why I build websites in WordPress is because WordPress allows me to create the framework that search engine robots love, so my son’s pottery gets found online.

The framework is a URL structure that looks like this…

Website builders like Wix or Squarespace, can only build a website URL that looks like this…

When I am able to give the robots more information in the URL, such as a Sub Category, and a Post Title, I have raised the chances that my customers websites will show up on page one of Google.

The key is knowing what words buyers are typing into Etsy’s™ search engine and using those exact words in your product titles

The good news is you don’t have to guess because Etsy™ tells you the exact words real buyers use to bring up your product.

This short video shows you where to find that information…

How To Find Words People Type into Etsy

Where do you find words that attract buyers to your products?

That takes keyword research.

My favorite tool to find words that buyers use is Keywords Everywhere. I simply enter a search term into the Etsy’s™ search bar that is related to my client’s product such as, coffee mug.

The search volume data is coming from Google, BUT the keywords in the dropdown menu are from Etsy™

Keywords Everywhere shows me relevant keywords and their monthly search volume.

After a bit of digging I uncovered an Etsy™ related word called Artisan Coffee Mug which had a monthly search volume of 260.

I added “Artisan Coffee Mug” to the product title.

My son added a short video and an image of his coffee mug.

TIP: Before uploading your images to Etsy™name them the EXACT name as your best keyword title, such as Artisan Coffee Mug.

He then added a description he knew would appeal to his customers.

I then related keywords as tags.

My son’s coffee mug appeared twice on the first page of Etsy™!

Etsy™ SEO Website: A Comprehensive Guide to Optimizing Your Etsy™ Shop

In addition to using Keywords Everywhere, I also read the Etsy™ handbook on best SEO practices. It gave me ideas on how to improve my son’s ranking on Etsy™ by using Tags.

Tags In Etsy

My biggest SEO take-away from Etsy’s™ Seller Handbook was their recommendation to use up to 13 longtail keywords in the Tags sections of your Etsy™listing.

Longtail keywords are a string of words that people type into Etsy™’s search field to find exactly what they are looking for, such as Artisan Coffee Mug, Ceramic Artisan Coffee Mug, Best Artisan Coffee Mug, etc.

Etsy’s™ seller handbook urges artists to complete the About section in their Etsy™ Shop page so that prospective buyers can learn more about you.

I simply copied and pasted the information from Converse’s WordPress website About page, and added a few more pictures.

TIP: People love seeing pictures of an artist in their studio.

Etsy™ automatically added the number of sales and how long Converse has been selling on his Etsy™ About page, which helps to build authority and trust in his product. Nice touch Etsy™!

Why Many Sellers Complain About Selling on Etsy™

Etsy™ controls their platform. Period.

And because they control their platform, Etsy™ makes it hard to know if your keywords and product descriptions are sending people to your Etsy™ Shop, or if your ads are sending people to your Etsy™ page.

Unfortunately, Etsy™ does not allow you to add tracking code track to your Etsy™ page. If you can’t add a tracking code, you will not know if people are coming to your Etsy™ page because they saw your ad, or if they found your product by entering in the same keywords you used in your Etsy™ title, description, and tags.

The BIG advantage to having your own WordPress website PLUS Etsy™

WordPress lets you ad add tracking code so that you can see what product pages people have clicked on.

Your own website increases your authority and inspires more trust, which leads to more sales online AND on Etsy™.

A WordPress website allows for maximum optimization. This increases your chances of coming up on page one of Google and raises your opportunity to make more sales.

The solution?

  • A free Etsy™ Shop and a WordPress website that is optimized for search engines
  • A button in your WordPress navigation menu that links to your your Etsy™ Shop
  • The same colors in both websites
