Stop the Website Design Spiral

December 10, 2013 by Nancy Fields 1 Comment

Is your desire for a website stronger than your need for a website? If you can answer these questions, you will have enough clarity about why you’re in business to successfully communicate why your perfect customer needs and wants you.

1. Who are you?
2. What do you do to help your clients/customers?
3. What does your work/product allow your clients/customers to do?
4. How can you best help your clients/customers?
5. Who is your ideal client/customer?

Having clarity about your business will save you time and money

When first starting out in business, most entrepreneurs feel like they need to have a website. A “need” is a lack of something, so it makes sense that a new business owner feels like they “need” a website. Unfortunately, this “need” frequently leads to multiple website designs before the business owner feels the have the right website for their business. To make matters worse, instead of going back to the first person who designed their site, and developing their idea further, they find another designer thinking that this new designer will get them closer to their goal. Often times the business owner will just get a different look, but be no closer to their goal.

How to stop the website design spiral

The opposite of need is desire: need = lack of something v.s. desire = to move toward something.

If an entrepreneur first comes from a place of “desiring” a website for their new business, they will increase their chances at getting it right the first time because desire leads to knowing why you want something. In the case of a website, when know why you want it, you’ll also be more likely to know with whom you most enjoying serving or working. Knowing who the site is being designed for is key to being able to attract the right customer.

Designed for conversion

If your website doesn’t convert visitors into customers it’s not a website that’s going to deliver ROI.

Websites that are designed to turn visitors into customers have three important elements. They:
1. quickly and effectively communicate what you do
2. have at least one opt-in form on each page for list building, and
3. are easy to navigate.

Best wishes for your continued success, and attaining your perfect website.
